ISLAMABAD: The Information Technology Ministry has imparted computer education to 10,000 students from backward areas while 1,000 students would get financial support of Rs 200,000 each to complete their education and research. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs & Northern Areas Qamar Zaman Kaira said this at a certificate-distribution ceremony held to award the Chancellor and Dean Honor Rolls to the top scoring students of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad Campus on Sunday.
The minister congratulated the students on their excellent academic achievements, and also appreciated the contribution of MAJU for the promotion of education in the country.
Kaira stressed the need for increase in budgetary allocation for education that stands at mere 2 percent, saying in developed world a hefty amount is being reserved for this vital sector.
He lauded the Punjab Group of Colleges for promoting education in the country. He also expressed gratitude to MAJU for awarding scholarships to five Kashmiri students. He said students from backward areas could give good account of themselves provided they are given equal opportunities which are available to those studying in developed areas. The minister called for eliminating poverty and illiteracy from the Muslim world, which was being interpreted negatively by the west. “We need to tell the world that providing facilities like health and education to the people as well as eliminating poverty is our priority,” he added.
PAL to confer fellowships upon writer: Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) Chairman Fakhar Zaman presided over a PAL meeting in which resident directors of provincial offices participated.
It was decided at the meeting that PAL life-time fellowship will be conferred upon senior writers known for their writings. He said awards for folk literature and children literature also might be introduced.
The chairman directed all the four resident directors to hold two seminars each month in their respective city. The first seminar will be held on the topic - Fall of Capitalism and Historical Prospectus of Sufism.
It was also decided the resident director will organise such seminars on the topics relating to literature, history, philosophy and sociology. It also decided that all the four provincial offices will under-take the assignment for compilation of History of Pakistani Adab.
The meeting was attended by Zaheer-ud-Din Malik, Kazi Javed, Agha Noor Muhammad Pathan, Dr Azam Khan Azam, Afzal Murad, Momin Khan Marwat, Muhammad Siddique, and Malik Maher Ali. The chairman appreciated the proposal for printing of literary calendar containing the brief note on the life, sketches and pieces from notable poets.
